Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello is a Brazilian businessman with a net worth of $2 billion. He is the chairman of energy company Raizen and conglomerate Cosan, which is one of the world’s largest producers of bioethanol, sugar, energy, and foods.
After graduating from the University of São Paulo, Rubens did his internship at Unibanco and became the youngest financial director of the Votorantim Group. He fought in court for 10 years to win full ownership of Cosan, which he turned into a major player in the global bioethanol industry.
In 2007, Rubens established Cosan Limited, which has a dual share structure that gives some of his shares ten times the voting weight of ordinary shares to strengthen his control over the company. Cosan operates in Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and the United Kingdom.
Rubens also serves as the director of UNICA, a lobbying organization of producers of sugarcane and ethanol fuel.
